Seeing Red in Dusseldorf

PUMA Sailing is set up at the Dusseldorf Boat Show. The show is running through January 31st. Stop by if you’re in the area!

From Life At The Extreme Magazine

PUMA Skipper Ken ReadBeing asked to write about my Volvo experience is nearly impossible without taking up about 500m pages. But, like all stories, this one has a beginning, middle and an end, or maybe not an end. Not yet anyway. I’ll get back to that in a bit.

My Volvo experience is not unique. Starting something from scratch is both exciting and a bit nerve-wracking. In the beginning, you’re trying to wear a lot of hats, working hard to concentrate on what is important at that particular time, being smart enough to put some very talented people in positions in which they could excel, yet trying to keep a watchful eye.

I have stated many times that I can’t ever remember being proud of a second place, but in this particular case second place was a great accomplishment. I have to tell you, there were plenty of times where I questioned a lot of what we were doing right down to its simplest form.

The important thing to establish at the beginning of a programme like this is that it is simply a start-up small business meant to market a product.

You have a pot of money to spend. You create budgets. You hire people. You put together time lines, and you remain flexible. On the hiring side, the first person in was clearly the most important. Read more

Helping Hand

Soles4Souls Inc announced that they would team up with global athletic brand, PUMA, to raise funds to help send more than 250,000 pairs of shoes to the Haiti victims.

Beginning January 16, PUMA and Soles4Souls will encourages consumers to donate funds at any one of the PUMA Stores across the country. Individuals will have the opportunity to donate $1, $5, or $10 to support the effort. Consumers can visit www.puma.com for store locations. PUMA will also be collecting gently worn shoes at their US offices in Westford and Boston to be used in the relief effort.
“As we struggle to comprehend the magnitude of this disaster, it’s easy to forget how important basic necessities – such as shoes – will be in the ongoing rescue and rebuilding efforts,” said Wayne Elsey, Founder and CEO of Soles4Souls. “We appreciate the quick response from our amazing friends at PUMA. Their support will help the victims in this area begin to rebuild their lives.”

The death toll from Tuesday’s quake continues to rise, and survivors and rescuers are facing dire health conditions including stifling heat, lack of clean water, broken glass and raw sewage.

PUMA and the Moth Class

You may have heard that PUMA is sponsoring International Moth Worlds in Dubai. Going from a Volvo 70 campaign to a small dinghy event may seem like a big jump, but Moths have been a part of PUMA’s sailing efforts from the start.

PUMA Sailing partnered with Bladerider International during the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-2009. The partnership showcased two fully PUMA-branded foiling moths at all 11 VOR stopovers. Crewed by world class Moth sailors, the mini ‘il mostro moths’ provided entertainment for spectators as they blasted around the harbors.

The Foiling Moth class is one of the fastest growing small boat classes in the world. Lifting out of the water in just five knots of winds and achieving boat speeds of over 25 knots, these boats dart around on their hydrofoils just like their namesake, moths in the night. Attracting crowds of astounded onlookers, the PUMA Moths were quite a spectacle for each of the Volvo Villages around the world.

Just In From Rambler

We got the call from Kenny, who is down in Key West after finishing the Ft. Lauderdale to Key West Race. Kenny was serving as Tactician onboard George David’s Rambler. It was our skippers first “distance race” since finishing the Volvo- a whole 12 hours! He was joined by Kimo Worthington, Casey Smith and Jerry Kirby.

Rambler had a good race, finishing first boat for boat and third on corrected time, a result the crew was very pleased with.

“It was a very fun tactical race and we’re really pleased with the result. We were sailing against a bunch of really good IRC boats in conditions that weren’t perfect for the big boats so it was all good. George David (owner and skipper of Rambler) puts the crew into positions where they really thrive and always has a team with excellent chemistry. Very fun to be around and very low pressure!

We had a few of the PUMA crew out there with us, even Kimo! It was nice to have him out sailing with us and he helped out a lots with tactics. Casey and Jerry were rock solid on the bow as usual, and I was told that Jerry had two original stories told during the race. Which is nearly unheard of!”

Down In Florida

Kenny and a few of the boys made the smart choice to leave freezing New England and head down to Florida. Of course, they’re down their “working” on Rambler, sailing in the Ft. Lauderdale to Key West Race.

We’re hoping they check in shorty- we’ll post something as soon as we get it in.

In Planning Mode

Just about two months out until Moth Worlds- the count down is on!!!

We’re currently in still in the process of how the PUMA International Moth World Championships is going to look, but one thing is for sure, we’re going to keep all our fans as close to the action as possible!
